Party Crashers Part Two

My last blog post I told you about my friend and I crashing a conference in Wilmington five years ago. Well, here is part two to this crazy story.

Two weeks ago our band was playing for a big event in Blowing Rock. After the band set up and I was just about to get into the elevator to go upstairs to change into my finery, these two girls came bouncing out of the elevator. The one girl asked me what kind of attire should she wear for this event. We start chatting about cocktail dresses and the Middle Eastern theme of the night. We talked about the belly dancers that would be performing and this and that.

All of a sudden this girl gets a crazed look in her eye. She stops and looks at me and says “You look so familiar, where do I know you from?”

Since she had very cool blond spiky hair I said “Are you a hair dresser?” “Did I come to your salon?” She slowly said “Nooooo” She looked at me again and said “Oh my God, I know, were you in Wilmington about five years ago?” I said “Yes.” She said “I remember you from our teachers conference. You and another girl crashed our party.” I totally got into Elaines character from Seinfeld and yelled “GET OUT!”

Of course we stood there reliving the whole episode in Wilmington and how much fun it was.

Can you believe this? Five years later she remembered me. I guess we made a huge impression. She said she had a photo of the group on her desktop and I am in it. That must have been the photo my girlfriend and I shoved our way into. We laughed so hard the joy was coming out in bucket loads.

I immediately called my girlfriend who went on the trip with me and screamed into the phone “You won’t believe this!” It was great, she came to the event that night and reconnected with our buddy from the conference. They too got to relive the craziness of the Wilmington trip.

The night was magical. I sang with a great band, we had two hundred and fifty people show up and this event raised $10,000 for the battered womens shelter in Boone. We’ve been playing this event for years and many of our old friends came out to see us. What a great night.

One big joyous moment after another!

The Conference Crashers

Five years ago my girlfriend and I took a long weekend trip to Wilmington, NC. What a trip it was! The two of us always seem to find a way to get into mischief.

We arrived in my sweet miata which broke down as soon as we got there. I can’t remember what happened to it but the nice guy at Advanced Auto Parts helped us out and then asked us out to dinner. Thanks but no thanks.

One night we decided to head over to the Blockade Runner Hotel which was located on the beach to see what was happening. We strolled around the halls and decided to pop our heads into one of the conference rooms. Low and behold there was some sort of teachers convention going on. We must have looked pretty friendly because they invited us in. Why not? Looks like fun to me.

We made ourselves right at home dancing and drinking and joining in with the gang. It was a hoot. We played this musical chair like game and I won the grand prize. They had some kind of dance contest and once again I won the prize. Door prizes, you guessed it, I won those too. Here we were strangers, conference crashers and I was cleaning up.

It gets funnier, when it came time for the photo for their newspaper we weaseled our way into that too. We laughed so hard thinking won’t they be surprised to see us in their little  Teachers Gazette when they get home?  Who are these girls and what were they doing at our convention?

The rest of the weekend was just as crazy. Writing about it makes me want to go back for another dose of fun.

A Theatrical Labor Of Love

Isn’t it something when a bunch of people get together for a cause and create something incredibly cool? This past weekend was like that for me.

A group of special people got together to put on a play to raise money for the community. Over the course of eight weeks we  encountered many obstacles and some days it seemed like there was no way we’d ever get through the drama of it all. You know how actors are! A crazy bunch for sure.

We worked diligently to learn our lines, get the blocking just right, find the costumes, create characters and put together a set. We rehearsed three nights a week for three hours and everyone was dedicated and passionate about what they were doing.

The guys who built the set were there for three days hammering, sawing, drilling and painting. The lights were hung and the sound was checked. What an awesome space they created out of nothing to present this play.

Two nights before the performance things weren’t going too well and the spirit of the players was slowly sinking. What do we do now? Work harder, and we did.

Dress Rehearsal came and it was great. The three performances were fabulous. How did that happen? It was like everyone kicked into high gear just as we got close to the finish line.

We had great audiences all three nights and everyone laughed, cried and had a wonderful time while raising money for the community.

What a great feeling it is to come together, have fun, work hard and raise money for a good cause. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Puppy Breath and Corn Chip Feet

The other night I was out celebrating my birthday with friends and we got on the subject of puppy breath. Now we all know how puppy breath smells and for some reason we like it. How strange is that?

Well, I don’t know how many of you have smelled your dogs feet but there’s something we like about that smell too. Frito corn chips. Yes, Frito corn chips I say.

I think more of you know what I’m talking about than let on. In fact one of my friends knew exactly what I was talking about but said he certainly wouldn’t admit that he smells his dogs feet to anyone. Not me, I admit it right here on my joy log.

My dog Frito sleeps on the foot of my bed. He curls up in a ball and is as cute as can be.

First thing in the morning I get up and scratch Frito’s belly, and sniff his cozy little feeties. He’s got tiny fluffy feet with lots of wispy fur. They smell just like frito corn chips. Odd, Frito was not named for that reason, he just looks like his name should be Frito. Now make sure you sniff the feet when the dog has been curled up sleeping. They lose the corn chip smell after they’ve been up for a while.

You must think I’m nuts, which I am, but I still say that there are more of you dog feet sniffers out there but you just don’t want to admit it. If you haven’t sniffed lately, I suggest that you do and let me know if your little buddies tootsies smell good enough to eat. Bring on the dip.

Hat Saved From Drowning

What is it about men and their hats? Some of the guys I know who collect them and are so possessive. They don’t like other people trying them on or messing with their hats in any way, shape or form.

Ken has a few hats and he is very fussy about them. He doesn’t appreciate them being tossed around in the car or thrown around the house like a dish rag. He takes good care of them and makes sure that they are in their place so as not to get squashed.

We went for a walk at the Arboretum today, it was very windy. Ken was looking dapper in his blue striped cotton summer hat.

We walked up to the fishing pier and leaned over the railing where the sign said “No swimming or diving off of pier.” Woosh! A big gust of wind came and knocked Kens hat off sending it reeling into the water. It was starting to drift away and was slowly sinking. Oh well, it’s just a hat.

The next thing I know Kens shoes are off and he’s climbing over the railing. Ken to the rescue! Kersploosh into the water he goes with his clothes on like a super hero. He swims out to the hat and grabs a hold of its brim just seconds before it’s demise.

I couldn’t believe it. He jumped in to save a hat. I hope he’s as quick to jump in and save me.
He climbed out of the water looking proud. He got the hat back into shape and laid it in the sun to dry. When we got home he continued to work on it’s shape.  He took the iron out and gave the brim a once over. Good as new.

What is it about men and their hats? I would have just let the thing drown in Lake Powhatan. Maybe the trout could have used it to lay eggs in.

Ken was happy he retrieved his hat and I was happy that he didn’t drown. Another joyous day.
