Uncontrollable Laughter

Have you ever experienced that uncontrollable laughter  where you can’t breathe, tears  stream down your face and you choke to get air?  It usually happens at the very worst of times.

I can remember getting caught soaping  windows when I was a kid. There we were, Halloween night soaping these garage windows and out came the owner of the house.

We started to laugh because we were so nervous.  While the man was lecturing us and getting a pail of sudsy water,  I was trying to control myself.  Was he really going to make us wash the windows?

I looked at the ground, my shoulders shook up and down and I can remember making this little noise in the back of my throat to keep from bursting out loud .

Isn’t it horrible to have to hold back ? It’s like not having a bathroom around when you really have to Pee.

Laughter for me truly is the best medicine. I try to laugh as often as possible. If there isn’t anything to laugh about I will create it.

I suggest you try to create laughter every day. Put some of your favorite music on and get a friend to dance around the house with you. You’ll laugh I guarantee. Try talking to your husband in a strange accent when you have your morning coffee. Draw each others faces.  Do a little skit with your dog. Fun doesn’t always just appear, you have to create it.

Let yourself  laugh. The other night Ken and I had a friend over for dinner and we laughed and laughed.  We shared stupid stories, ate good food and cackled like hyenas.  The next day we felt like a million bucks.

Drowning In Valveeta Cheese Spread

I don’t know about you but I don’t really like having  lots of stuff.  It doesn’t make me FEEL comfy and cozy like it does for some  people. It makes me FEEL overwhelmed. I FEEL stuck and smothered when there’s clutter everywhere as if I’m drowning in a jar of Velveeta Cheese Spread. Uch-the thought of it.

I imagine I FEEL this way because I lived in a hotel room for fourteen years and was the happiest I’ve ever been. I didn’t own much of anything. I had clothes, band equipment, a wee fry pan, an iron and a mini fridge. It gave me the FEELING of freedom and movement. That’s what we’re all after isn’t it? A FEELING you get from something.

Once we got off  of the road and  bought a house everything changed. I wanted the FEELING of  home and security.  I had to have the kitchen gadgets, the gardening tools, the crystal and china, the furniture, the plants, the dogs, and the doo dads.  How could you possibly live without the very cool lemon squeezer or the ronco slice and dice machine?

I’m not a real collector of junk but somehow over the years we ended up with our fair share.  Ken and I have been talking about purging for the last year because we want that FEELING of freedom and movement again. The other day we took some action.  Ken called a friend who sells items on Ebay and we gave her some old musical equipment to advertise.

I got rid of my spoon collection. Who the heck wants to collect spoons?  What do you do with these things? You can’t eat with them. You look at them once in a while and polish them. That’s exciting.

My mother wanted me to have something to collect when I started singing on the road so she bought me my first spoon in 1975. Every town I performed in I bought a spoon.  Of course  I had to have a spoon rack to put the stupid spoons in. My mother bought me a lovely hand carved spoon rack and up it went on my wall.  Nice.

I hated the spoons.  Believe it or not, I found them the other day in my basement in a baggie.  I was attached for a minute thinking of how many years I had had them and how sweet my mother was.  After my moment of reminiscing I said “Take them away” and gave them to my friend to put on Ebay.  Give them to some other person who thinks they need to collect spoons.

There is joy in clearing away stuff.  I know it runs deeper than just getting rid of things. Emotions are tied up in the stuff and we keep things for many different reasons.

Some people have abandonment issues, some have security issues, some poverty issues.  Sometimes we need to hold on to the life we once knew.  If we want to move on and see a new life for ourselves then we need to change some things. One of the things that helps is getting rid of things that keeps us stuck. We need to look beyond the things and see why we have so much stuff and what it represents. We need to let go so we can move forward.

I just took clothes to Goodwill and we gave old computers to Charlotte Street Computers. They have a recycling center there in case you’re interested. It really FEELS good to get the energy moving again. If you’re a pack rat just try throwing one or two things away and see how it FEELS. If it FEELS good, get rid of a few more things. It makes way for new thought, new ideas, and new energy to come into your life. It really does.

It’s like opening the window and taking a deep breath of fresh air. AHHHH!

Thieves At Midnite

I just noticed  the apple tree across the street is bearing fruit. It reminded me of the year before last when my next door neighbor and I decided to pick apples.

The apple tree isn’t ours,  it’s on the property of the doctors building across the street. No one over there is  interested in the apples so they usually end up all over the ground and in the street.

What a waste.  Someone (us) should pick them and make pies or apple sauce.  Do something with them don’t you think?  Besides, wouldn’t we be helping them keep their property clean and neat?  What if a patient tripped over an apple and SUED?  We would be doing them a service by picking them right?

My neighbor Didi and I decided to pick at midnite when it was cool and  there was less traffic.

Let’s see, what’s worse, looking like thieves in the day time or looking like thieves in the night.  What if the police had come by and saw us out there sneaking around? Would they have arrested us for trespassing? Never mind, we could have broken our necks out there in the dark.

The adventure, the joy, the risk, the snooping around. What fun.

We got the ladder and luckily there was a street light right next to the tree.  It gave us just enough light that we could see what we were doing without too much trouble.

We were like two kids.  Didi climbed up the ladder and pulled the branches down so I could grab the apples.  We filled bags of them.

Ken looked out the window, smiled at us and just shook his head.

Fine, laugh at us but we made some fabulous apple sauce that year. I’m looking forward to picking again soon.

The Hair Dilemma

Vanity.  That’s it.

Why else would women spend three hours in a salon and spend over a hundred dollars on having their hair colored every six weeks?  What are we nuts?

I started this mess long ago and once you’ve joined the club it’s hard to drop out.

I have quite a bit of gray hair mixed in with my dark brown and I’m not ready to do the salt and pepper thing yet.  I’m just not.

What choices do we have?  Color it ourselves or pay to have it done.  I’ve done both and I don’t know which is more painful.  Shelling out that kind of money hurts but doing it yourself  can be a disaster.

The first time I decided to color my hair which was years ago,  I tried a deep wine burgundy color. It looked nice on the cover of the box.  How hard could this be?  What a mess that was.  I only left it on a short time but I turned my hair completely black.  I mean black with a capital “B”,  I looked like a witch.  Even worse,  it was winter time so my skin color was a pale, pastie white.  Against the black hair I wanted to die.  I couldn’t look in the mirror for months.  I swore never again!

Since then I’ve been to several different people and sometimes I’m happy and sometimes I’m not.

The other day I was feeling extra bold and I went and bought a kit with color and highlights included.   I’m going to try this again.  The inner voice said “NOOOOOOO!  Don’t do it!  Don’t you remember the black hair and how horrible it was? Don’t do it!  My confident voice said “Oh shut up! So many people color their own hair and they look  fine,  I can do this.”

I opened the box,  read the directions fifty six times and after a meditation,  deep breathing exercises and a pint of whiskey (kidding) I put my gloves on and schmeared the stuff on my head.  Lord get me through this.

I was so nervous that I only left it in ten minutes and quickly washed it out.  I rinsed and then put the highlights in.  Just pretend like you know what you’re doing.  Attitude is everything.  Dive in just like the hairstylists do.

Done!

The first day I was a little worried about how dark it was but after a few days I was actually ok with it.  I asked a few of my girlfriends what they thought and everyone seemed to honestly like how it looked.  Ken even told me what a great job I did.  YESSSS!

The joy of success!

Yes I’m A Movie Star

Maybe I’m strange but I love to meet people on the street and have a spontaneous interplay with them.

Today was such a day.

My girlfriend and I were walking downtown Asheville playing tourist when these three African American big boys made some wise crack as we were walking by.  They were trying to be cute while they were checking us out.

We could have flipped them off or reacted rudely but I thought to myself, these guys could be fun to play with.

At one point they told us we looked like movie stars so I ran with it.

“We are, this is Lolita and I am Francois. Did you see our latest film?”  He asked me what the name of it was and I quickly replied “Behind Closed Doors.”  Not a bad name for having to come up with something on the spot.

I said “Aren’t you guys actors as well?”  They said “Yes.”  I asked them the name of their latest film and he said “Mandingo”.  I said “I think our film was playing in Cinema One and your film was playing in Cinema Four.

I yelled out so people passing by could hear me.  “When is your new movie coming out?” “May I have your autograph?”  With that I opened my purse, got out a pen and paper and handed it to one of the guys who wrote down his name and phone number.  Of course a few people were curious and looked at them to see if they were someone special that they may recognize.  Not.

I loved it because they new how to play with me.  They were actually from Fort Bragg and were here visiting.

I love when people are quick witted and are willing to run with something you give them.  It brought joy and laughter to all of us involved.  Instead of leaving a horrible taste in my mouth thinking that they were scum bags, I left rather amused and proud of the way our encounter turned out.

That’s what I mean when I say Experience Joy And Pass It On! You just have to be open and look at things from a new perspective.

They Look Just Like Me

What if you walked into a room and twenty girls  had a face just like yours, and they dressed just like you? That would be freaky.

This idea came to me one day when we were planning a party for a friend of mine.

First, we found a great head shot of our friend and made copies. We then cut the photos out and glued them onto paint stir sticks. We popped out the eyes of the photo and presto instant mask.

We asked all the girls, which was about twenty, to dress like our friend.  She has many looks but one of her distinct styles is hair in pony tail, jeans, glitzy belt, long sleeve striped shirt and a big fuzzy vest of some sort. Oh yes, let’s not forget the Crocs.  Add some fancy bracelets and earrings and you’ve got the look.  She is gorgeous by the way so I don’t mind looking like her at all.

There we were all dressed pretty much the same with our masks ready to go.  We couldn’t wait for her to walk in.  She entered the room and we held the faces up so that she was looking at herself many times over.  She was quite amused and  surprised.

If you want to give this party idea a try be my guest and let me know how it goes.

Please share your party ideas with us.  We’re always looking for new and fun ways to have a good time.

Pizza Delivery

Here’s a story that will make you laugh for sure!

Ken and I were in Boone on a business trip and decided to surprise our dear friend Margo.

Here’s how the story went.

My friend Anne called Margo to see what she was doing for the evening. Margo just happened to be free. Perfect.  Anne told Margo that she would order a pizza, have it delivered to Margo’s apartment and she would be over in a little while.

Now the fun starts.

How about Ken showing up as the very strange delivery boy? Ken agreed and we adorned him with a black pageboy wig with bangs and a pair of large dark glasses. He looked like a cross between cousin IT and Charles Manson. I certainly would be scared to see this guy at my door.

Next, we needed to find an empty pizza box.

Anne and I headed down the street looking in all of her neighbors garbage cans.  There wasn’t  a pizza box to be had.  I suppose we could have just gone to a Pizza place and gotten a box or even ordered a pizza for that matter. Oh no, that would have been too easy. We decided to check out the dumpster.

Lo and behold, there was a garbage bag in there with some corners poking out. We were sure it was a pizza box so Anne hoisted herself up and flung her tiny body over the edge of the dumpster.  I grabbed hold of her feet and slowly eased her in head first just enough that she could reach the garbage bag.  She ripped it open. Score! It was a pizza box and it was clean and neat. Unbelievable, a pizza box without any icky cheese or sauce on it. The box was in perfect shape, not even a bent corner.   How could it get any better than this?

We brought the pizza box back to Anne’s condo, got Ken and off we went to Margo’s house.  Anne and I waited in the car and Ken went upstairs and knocked on Margo’s door.  Ken mumbled “Pizza Delivery.”

Margo just about had a heart attack when she answered the door.  There are a lot of strange looking students at ASU but this guy really startled her.  We had such a good laugh when she realized it was Ken.  We howled and screamed with joy. We got the camera out and took pictures.

Ken just got a mug in the mail for his birthday from Margo.  It has a picture of him as the delivery boy on it and the caption reads “Pizza Ma’am?”

Life can get stressful and overwhelming. These are the things that I do to bring laughter and lightheartedness into my world.  It works. Try it sometime.
